U12, s Hurricanes v Deans Sports 17.3.2012

Managing to salvage a draw from the clutches of victory, Hurricanes returned from a short trip to Deans Sports wondering just how they had come away with only a solitary point !

Ryan “Hot shot ” Curran was today’s captain and also wearing the keeper’s jersey he carried out the prematch rituals in the centre circle.

Encouragingly Hurricanes started brightly and positively with what seemed to be a front four today, consisting of Kai and Ben playing centrally and James and Mathew providing the width, they carved many early attacks. Unfortunately though sharing the early chances between them they were all blocked or saved on route to goal.

Inevitably all this pressure led to Hurricanes first goal. Mathew Whiteside blasted in his tenth goal of the season this time giving the Deans keeper no chance of saving. As the first half drew to a close, Hurricanes having dominated most of the play, and Ryan only being called into action once or twice, would they be left to regret missed opportunities to extend their slender lead?

Having had an energetic half in mid field alongside Mark Shields, Zazuum returned to the more familiar surroundings between the posts, swapping positions with Ryan. Zazuums first duty though was to pick the ball out of the net ! Deans having equalised when the defence failed several times to clear their area and a goal was scrambled in.

Deans then took the lead controversially most thought ,when a melee around the penalty spot ended with Zazuum pouncing on the lose ball only to have the ball kicked from his hands not once but twice. The referee deemed everything legal and Hurricanes found themselves now 2-1 down.

Still playing the only way they no how Hurricanes carried on passing their way toward their opponents goal again creating chances but not finishing them ,until however Mason Gregg exchanged some neat short passing with Mathew just inside the box resulting in a shot from Mason that was only partially saved but the Referee was on hand to judge the ball had crossed the goal line. 2-2 with 10 minutes to play !

Ten more minutes of sustained Hurricanes pressure but alas no winning goal so both teams shook hands on a point-a piece. Hurricanes probably the more disappointed but credit has to go to both teams for the way they both fought back form being behind.

The team performance today was a vast improvement on last weeks although with other results going against them Hurricanes drop a place in the division two table. Lucas and Daniel made a terrific central partnership both having exceptional games, Mason at right back linked up well Mathew with both of them grabbing goals and James Murphy who playing in his usual left wing position decided today he would claim the MotM award. James was decisive and positive today .crossing, dribbling and shooting and instrumental in Hurricanes domination of the game and so earned his first MotM this season.

U12’s Hurricanes v Moorside Green 25.2.2012

Added by Drew Hogben on February 28 2012

A well deserved 4-1 victory over neighbours Moorside Green at Stott Lane sees Hurricanes move up a place in the division two table.

Lucas Warburton was captain for today’s home fixture leading his team to a well earned victory with another solid and reliable display at centre half.

Zazuum back in his normal position between the posts was a mere spectator for the first half only touching the ball in the first minute after what was to be a rare Moorside attack.

All the play was in Moorside territory and any attempt to relieve the onslaught was quickly dealt with by Lucas and his fellow defenders Mason, Ryan and Elliot.

Playing in a more advanced role than normal Kai Leonard was relishing this new position and the freedom that came with it. The link up play between he and his fellow attackers should have resulted in a more positive score line at halftime rather than the 1-0 Hurricanes managed to achieve. Although only one goal it was worth the entrance fee. Coming from a move down the right side. The very tricky Mathew Whiteside exchanged passes with Kai everyone thought the move would end just as the previous twenty had, but Kai had other ideas and not just admiring his pass he raced on to the return. Steaming into the box he smashed Mathews return pass high into the roof of the net catching the ball on the half volley.

Five minutes into the second half Hurricanes gifted Moorside a chance to get themselves back into the contest when a penalty was given away cheaply and confidently despatched to even up the score line. A quick response from Hurricanes from the restart resulted in Ben Crowther netting his twelfth of the season to regain the advantage their play had deserved.

Although having majority of the possession Hurricanes were finding it increasingly difficult to make the score line reflect their domination until Kai popped up with second of the day his shot taking a big deflection on its way to the net. (With no dodgy goal panel sitting this weekend Kai claimed the goal) and finally Keane Riley- Newman finding himself in the right place at the right time superbly controlled a firm low cross from Mathew and thumped the ball home from close range. The final whistle sounded on a 4-1 victory and three well earned points against close geographical and divisional rivals.

A much improved team display with Hurricanes at last back to their passing best. The defence was solid, the midfield of Josh ,Mark Harry, and Keane all working harder than of late. James and Mathew on the flanks were always threatening and contributed to much of Hurricanes attacking play. Ben who is very rarely off the score sheet and worked tirelessly for the team and finally to Kai who played in a new position, had his best game, scored two goals and walked away with his first MotM award this season.

U12′s Hurricanes v Irlam Vale Falcons

U12’s Hurricanes v Irlam Vale Falcons 18.2.2012

After waiting over 4 weeks to play this tough away fixture against a free scoring Irlam side, Hurricanes were eager to get back playing after the enforced winter break …….

After picking up MotM for the third time in Hurricanes last outing Daniel Hickey represented Hurricanes as captain and carried out the prematch formalities.

Straight from the kick off Irlam gained possession and before any spectator had found their seat or taken the lid off their coffee and with stand in keeper Ryan hotshot Curran still familiarising himself with the muddy and boggy goal area Hurricanes were a goal down.

The only consolation for going a goal behind so early is there are 59 minutes to reply. Unfortunately  5 minutes later Hurricanes were 2-0 down, a further 10 minutes and the score was 3-0.To most spectators and certainly the Irlam players an impending goal fest was certainly in the reckoning as they were more  than determined to gain ground on Ordsall at the top of the division.

As the rest of the first half progressed Hurricanes slowly crept back in the game, though not creating too much up front they at least got to grips with Irlams forwards, of which at times there were as many as seven. Lucas Warburton at the heart of the defence and Ryan Hotshot Curran in goal, were the main reasons the score stayed at 3-0 when the half time whistle blew.

Was a second half come back possible? The half time team talk certainly put more emphasis on being more aggressive and positive in their play and as a result Mason Gregg awoke from his first half slumber to put in a great defensive performance and at times his interceptions and runs into Irlams territory were starting to increase their belief it was possible. Elliot playing at right back never needs much of an invitation to push forward and this in turn pushed Mathew on the right wing further into Irlams half of the pitch where he was able to send in crosses and a few shots on goal.

Unfortunately the goals never came and for the first time this season Hurricanes failed to score in their opponent’s net. However Irlam had scored 60 goals so far this season and shutting them out for the second half was something Hurricanes should be proud of. The final whistle blew on this match at 3-0.

Individual performances noted today were Ryan (stand in keeper), Elliot (for his ability to run with the ball till the final whistle),  Mathew (always an available outlet) Ben (shear work rate )  Mason (for turning his performance around) and Lucas (an outstanding defensive display). MotM was awarded to a player that was signed as a striker but has adapted his game to become a tower of strength at centre half with consistently good performances and picks up his second MotM award….Lucas Warburton……

U12,2 Hurricanes v Salford Victoria 7.1.2012

U12’ s Hurricanes v Salford Victoria  7.1.2012

As Hurricanes welcomed a new team to the division would the new year start with a victory just as 2011 had finished?

Ryan (hot shot) Curran greeted SalfordVictoria’s captain and the referee at the centre spot to carry out the pre match formalities.

Hurricanes started the match the stronger team and began to apply pressure forcing the opposition back deep into their own half, Ben and James both going close but lacking composure just when it was required in front of goal.

Despite Salford’s lowly league position their passing and determination was beginning to restore the balance of play in their favour and Bradley “Zazuum” Smith had to leave the sanctuary of his area several times to clear Salford’s through balls, but it was Hurricanes who broke the deadlock when Ben Crowther bagged his tenth goal of the season and eased the mounting pressure on his team.

Salfordhit back soon after to level the score line 1-1 before Mathew Whiteside netted his first of the day and took Hurricanes in at the interval with a slight advantage at 2-1.

Even a stern team talk at half time could not seem to shake Hurricanes into any kind of fluency and their own passing game carried stuttering along. Thankfully Mathew Whiteside popped up with his second of the day to give Hurricanes a two goal advantage.

A realisation that this game still had life in it came when Salford hit back again to reduce the deficit to just one goal. Aware of the game slipping form them, Hurricanes released Bradley Zazuum Smith from between the posts (replaced by Ryan) to give the team some fresh energy. Shortly after the switch and after some neat passing down the right side Zazuum smashed the ball high into the roof of the Salford net from 12 yards to make the score line a more comfortable 4-2.

The game was put to bed after James Murphy collected the ball a few yards from the halfway line and outpacing the defender slotted his shot passed a diving keeper for his first goal of the season and Hurricanes fifth.

Final result 5-2, a score line that rather flattered Hurricanes on  today’s performance but having played far better and leaving with nothing in the past Hurricanes will take the three points and move on to next weeks fixture.

No MotM was awarded for today’s game . However good performances were noted by Lucas Warburton, Mason Gregg and of course Zazuum.

Hurricanes go marching on!

U12’ s Hurricanes v Swinton Lions

Challenge cup 10.12.2011

 Hurricanes go marching on!

A convincing 4-1 victory against Swinton Lions sees Hurricanes into the next round of the challenge cup for the first time in many years.

Up for the challenge despite being without Bradley Zazuum Smith their regular keeper a returning Kia Leonard (broken arm) stood in for the absent Zazuum as skipper for this game.

From the whistle Kai started accurately passing the ball out to both wings, something that had been lacking from their game in the last few weeks and so Hurricanes were able to create the first of many openings. Ben Crowther again looking determined up front was revelling in the service he was getting from the wide positions and although straying off side too many times the eagerness was clear to see.

Hurricanes gained advantage with a sweet move started by Kai who played a beautiful pass out to Mathew Whiteside on the right wing who in turn played in a cross that was gratefully received by Ben and dispatched accordingly. Swinton then brought the scores level when a long range shot headed goal wards.  Harry Grimshaw (stand in keeper) seemed to have it covered but unfortunately he could only parry the ball upwards into the net. It was the first time Harrys hands had touched the ball since kick off!

Hurricanes much deserved second goal again started by Kai who this time played in Elliot down the left flank. He looked up and playing a one two with Ben sent in a deeper cross that found Mathew unmarked inside the box, letting the ball bounce once he then riffled his shot over the keepers head to give Hurricanes a 2-1 advantage to take to the interval.

After having a great first half in the centre of mid field Josh Finney swapped his shirt for the keeper’s jersey and let his teammate Harry out from between the posts. James Murphy replaced Elliot on the left flank and he continued to press the Swinton back line sending in crosses and even a few shots on goal. Hurricanes were again in the ascendency with the back line consisting of Daniel, Lucas, Mason and a more than determined Ryan all standing firm against any Swinton attack. Could Hurricanes score more goals to put this cup tie to bed?

Of course they could, with this much domination and possession it was only a matter of time, another well taken goal from Ben to give him his 9th of the season and another by Mathew to take his total to 7th gave Hurricanes a 4-1 advantage. The score line should have been more with Ben, Keane and James all  firing straight at the keeper when a little more composure was really needed (some people are never satisfied).

A really enjoyable cup match in which both teams played their part. Two fairly even sides but it was Hurricanes who will be in the draw for the next round and there opponents will be either De La Salle Devils or Swinton Lions bigger brothers the Jaguars both of these teams from division 1.

When all the team play like they did today it becomes very difficult to choose a MotM. Ben and Mathew both on the score sheet, Harry and Josh for stepping in when their team needed them (in goal) Lucas in the heart of defence putting in another solid performance, for his sheer passing ability Kai was in the reckoning. However there was one player who never put a foot wrong today and if only his 40yard run and dribble had ended with a goal it would have made this choice easier. Ryan (hot-shot) Curran tackled, headed, cleared, .dribbled, blocked and passed his way to today’s MotM award making it his second of the season.
