JACKSON STRIKES AS BEECHFIELD GO JOINT-TOP.

Salford Beechfield United went joint-top of the Lancashire and Cheshire League’s Premier Division after a comfortable 3-1 home win over Denton Town. United started brightly and were ahead within seven minutes. The Denton keeper could not hold Mike Gould’s swerving free-kick and Richard Jackson took full advantage when he hammered home the rebound. Denton Town had a penalty claim turned down but they drew level on 16 minutes via John Aspinall. The visitors continued to play some good attacking football and were in control for the remainder of the first half. And in the early part of the second period United’s keeper Neil McLoughlin and Man of the Match Chris Ellison had to be at their best to keep the lively Denton forwards at bay. But gradually United started to enjoy more possession and regained the lead in the 68th minute following a superb move involving Anthony Weall and substitute Matt Little who scored form close range. Denton Town continued to threaten but United sealed the victory with ten minutes remaining when Lee Murray pounced after Luke Mather’s free-kick had hit the crossbar. (10/1/2004)

BEECHY GAIN SUCCESS IN RHODES CUP.

High-Flying Salford Beechfield United progressed to the second round of the Rhodes Cup after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Bedians who were good value for their 1-0 lead at the interval. But United got back on level terms thanks to an Anthony Weall spot kick and minutes later Aaron Dennis fired home a brilliant second goal. United’s Stuart Wharton was outstanding in defence while Richard Jackson produced another inspirational performance in midfield. The second team were involved in a thriller coming out on top 5-4 after a helter-skelter Wray Cup tie against St Margaret Mary. Scott Fisher (2) Simon Cornwell, Aaron Tompkins and Tony Bennett found the net while keeper Steve Grimes made several quality saves. (24/1/2004)

The former Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, Everton, Chelsea and Blackburn Rovers player Duncan McKenzie was Guest Speaker at a Sportsman’s Dinner held at the Reebok Stadium on Friday 12th March 2004. Entertainment was provided by Comedian Gary Marshall.

Following an emphatic 6-1 victory over Radcliffe Borough the Under 16s were confirmed as champions of Division 2 in the Bury and Radcliffe Junior League. Alex Brogan (3) Peter Bell, Brad Loughrey and Ryan Farrelly scored the goals. (Team Manager – Brendan Loughrey) (25/4/2004) At the league’s Presentation Event United also received the trophy for being the Most Sporting Team. Ryan Farrelly was Division 2 Player of the Year. The Under 16s also won the Bridge FC 6-a-side Tournament.

BEECHFIELD SPOT-ON IN SEMI-FINAL THRILLER.

United claimed a place in the final of the Rhodes Cup after beating local rivals Salford Victoria on penalties in a thrilling semi-final which ended 3-3 after extra time. Salford Victoria who had been reduced to 10 men after 15 minutes, were leading 3-2 with just thirty seconds remaining. Following a goalless first half Vics opened the scoring via David Leach but Mike Gould equalised and Matt Little put Beechy ahead. Mark Dwyer drew the scores level again and when substitute Dave Denton gave Vics a 3-2 lead it looked as if the 10 men had done enough. But in the dying seconds Matt Little grabbed a dramatic equaliser before United keeper Neil Mcloughlin saved two spot-kicks as United Beechy won 3-0 following the penalty kick decider. (24/4/2004)

United’s First Team finished in third place in the Lancashire and Cheshire League’s Premier Division but they still had a reason to celebrate at the end of the season. On Wednesday 5th May United met Hazel Grove in the Rhodes Cup Final played at the home of Abbey Hey FC. Beechy produced a scintillating performance and goals by Gould, Weall and Little saw United lift the trophy thanks to a 3-1 victory. The starting line-up was Neil McLoughlin, Luke Mather, Chris Ellison, Christian Bates, Stuart Wharton, Richard Jackson, Mike Gould, Anthony Rice, Aaron Dennis, Anthony Weall and Matt Little.
